In some Green Lantern: The Animated Series forums (okay, namely at the one over at Toonzone.net) some astute viewers have noticed missing scenes when comparing the episode that aired on 11-11-11 versus the version screened at NY comic con.

Here's my side of the story:

The version we screened at NY comic con was meant to be the final version of the show.  What we didn't realize was that in order to fit the DC nation format, we'd have to cut additional time from both episodes.  So, back to the editing room we went to make some tough calls.

Yes, M'ten's hand used to writhe in pain before cutting away to his "death scene".  And yes, Hal used to foreshadow his ring running out of energy by admitting to Carol he always forgets to charge his cell phone.   I was bummed to lose these shots, but as I said before, something had to go.  In fact, a lot of people didn't notice that we sped up some of the action scenes to make them more punchy and frantic (specifically the Interceptor-Red Lantern Probe chase at the top of episode two).

Incidentally, both episodes also had to be re-scored and re-mixed to match the new edits.  It was tedious work for everyone, but I hope Freddie our composer and sound engineers Rob and John got some extra Christmas spending money out of it.

One sequence that got cut very, very early (during the animatic stage of production) occurred at the end of the episode.  It's at night, and Carol is shown waiting in her office, stood up by Hal.  She checks her clock (or watch, I can't remember), then gets up in frustration, shuts off the lights and leaves the room.  I thought it was a cool Hal-Carol relationship moment, but alas, the episode (even at the time) was way long and it never made it to animation.

Hopefully the cut scenes will end up at the very least on the DVD release, although I seriously doubt we'd take time to "finish" the lost Carol scene.  Maybe I'll post the storyboards if I can find them.

I remember this happened to the first episode of Young Justice as well; they previewed the first episode, and then the official release was a lot shorter. Oh well.

Yeah, literally sped up the footage. Sometimes you can get away with that during action scenes, it actually makes it better. They do it in live action all the time.

When you say "sped up", do you actually mean you sped up the footage? Because I didn't notice at all.

I would be incredibly surprised if the GL:TAS dvds have extras at all. We were totally stiffed on the season sets for Batman: The Brave and The Bold (but it is nice to see extras on the animated movies). Luckily, the lack of extras are made up when people on the staff of the various shows and movies blog online. I hope you can post those storyboards. The final shot of Razer works but deleted scenes are always fun.

I thought Episode One worked well regardless. I think it's a good problem to have when you actually can cut the fat. The good, juicy fat. I mean, how else am I going to know to buy the Star Wars Lego Millenium Falcon at commercial break?

Rufftoon, you mean like a mash up between the two? I seriously doubt that - yeah, it would probably be the convention version. Maybe in addition to the one that aired?

Can we be hoping for some DVD extras then? Hoping you still have the convention version, because I can't imagine re-editing the episode.
